AAMCN Legislative Committee

Do you realize the power the nurse has over the public? Do you know who your state legislators are? Have you ever written a letter to make sure a law was enacted in your state or by your federal legislator? If not, start now!

Public polls have demonstrated that the public trusts nurses more than any other professional. We need to use our education and experiences to positively effect change in the healthcare system today. The best way to effect change is through legislation.

Legislators are regular people. Often times they have expert knowledge in a certain area, but they must rely on the public to educate them about certain topics that may be unfamiliar to them. By using your knowledge and experiences as a nurse in the managed care arena to educate legislators, we can prevent over burdensome laws and regulations that hinder the delivery of quality care to patients.

Take action now! Identify who your local and state representatives are and start writing letters, e-mails and calling them. Most of them will even give personal face-to-face time if you request it. The AAMCN has provided the tool below to help you shape healthcare in your state.

Now is the time to voice your opinion and take action!
  • Some in Washington are proposing significant funding cuts for the Medicare Advantage program and these cuts could impact the work AAMCN members do every day for seniors and disabled individuals across America.

  • In fact, one proposal being considered in Congress right now would push 5,000,000 Medicare beneficiaries out of Medicare Advantage.  These patients would lose access to nursing services like Utilization Management, Care Coordination, Disease Management and Quality Improvement.

  • Nursing jobs could be lost.

  • Health plans as well as healthcare professionals are working with the Coalition for Medicare Choices to stop these funding cuts.   Congress will listen to thousands of calls from nurses - be part of the process!

  • Please take five minutes and call 800-341-6165 to record a message for your Member of Congress.  Tell them that you are a nurse and let them know about the valuable work you do for patients every day.

  • Even if you do not work with Medicare Advantage patients, cuts in these programs could set a damaging precedent as Congress considers overall health care reforms later this year.

  • Act now to have your voice heard.

  • It's time nurses speak up and let our Members of Congress hear about the important work we do for patients in Medicare Advantage and to ensure that the important work we do can continue.

  • In original (fee-for-service) Medicare, seniors and disabled beneficiaries have no access to managed care nurses!

    Please call 800-341-6165.
